Summerville’s First Designer Show House To Benefit Children In Crisis (2008)
The following was featured in conjunction with 2008's Sixth Annual Scrumptious Summerville Kitchen Tour. The public was invited to tour a 10-room designer show house, beginning Monday, October 13, in historic Summerville. The historic property at 127 West Fifth South St., was probably built around 1877 and is locally known as “The Teacherage”. Mr. James H. Spann, Superintendent from the Summerville School District purchased the home in 1944 to serve as a boarding house for young, unmarried teachers from out of town, and it was used for this purpose until 1953. Most recently, it was the home of Mr. and Mrs. James W. Berry.
The Children In Crisis Benefit Designer Show House featured 10 rooms designed by low country interior designers each emphasizing their personal choice of furnishings, decorative fabrics and accessories. “We are so excited to be part of this unique opportunity to showcase one of historic Summerville’s beautiful homes,” said Designer Show House Coordinator Gloria Thiem, Allied ASID, of Riverside Designers in Charleston. “We think the community of Summerville will be proud and excited to see what the designers have planned for their beloved “Teacherage” she added. The Town of Summerville purchased the home in December 2007 because of its proximity to Azalea Park. The Town plans to rent the facility for meetings and receptions.
Admission to the Children In Crisis Benefit Designer Show House will be $15 per person at the door. The home will be open from Monday, October 13-Saturday, November 1. The hours are 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sundays. The kick off of the Designer Show House will occur in conjunction with the Sixth Annual Scrumptious Summerville Kitchen Tour on Sunday, October 12.
In a recent display at the Summerville-Dorchester Museum on Summerville’s Architectural Heritage, Curator Chris Ohm describes The Teacherage as “one of the most unique houses in Summerville, certainly one of the handsomest, with several unusual features. The most notable unique feature of the home is the octagon shaped room in the center of the home that features a lofty ceiling with a medallion window skylight.”
